Detailed Functionality
Characters are counted as user-perceived symbols (grapheme clusters): an emoji such as 👍, a family emoji built from several code points or a letter with a combining accent each count as one character. The Characters (no spaces) figure ignores all whitespace, including tabs and line breaks. Words are whitespace-separated tokens; Chinese and Japanese, which are written without spaces, are split into words with the browser's built-in word segmentation (Intl.Segmenter).
Lines are counted by line breaks (a Windows CRLF counts once), paragraphs by blank lines between blocks of text, and sentences by the terminators ., !, ?, … and the CJK full stops 。!?; a last sentence without punctuation still counts. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 130, rounded to whole minutes, with at least 1 minute for any non-empty text.
The statistics are computed by JavaScript in the page: the text is not uploaded and the tool does not store it. Paste and Copy use the system clipboard and may ask for your browser's permission.
Practical Examples
Two paragraphs: Hello world! How are you?, a blank line, then Second paragraph. gives 7 words, 3 sentences, 2 paragraphs, 3 lines and 44 characters (37 without spaces).
Emoji and accents: 👍 café is 2 words and 6 characters — the emoji and the accented é count as one character each.
Japanese without spaces: 東京は晴れです。 is counted as 4 words (in Chrome; the exact split depends on the browser's dictionary), 8 characters and 1 sentence.
Speech length: a 1,000-word text shows 5 min reading time and 8 min speaking time.

Tips and Best Practices
- A dot inside a number or abbreviation also ends a sentence:
Version 2.0 is out...counts as 2 sentences ande.g. this oneas 3, so treat the sentence count as an estimate. - For limits measured in characters (meta descriptions, SMS, social posts) use Characters (with spaces); some services count UTF-16 units instead, where one emoji can count as 2.
- Thai, Lao, Khmer and other scripts written without spaces are not segmented: a run of such text counts as one word.
- Korean and Hindi separate words with spaces, so they are counted like English.
- After the first visit the page also works without a network connection.
