DNS Lookup

Look up A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA and PTR records through the DNS resolver on your computer.

The query goes to your computer's DNS resolver through the local agent. The name and the answer stay on this page.

Local agent

Paste the current code from the agent window. The field is cleared after each attempt.

Set up the agent

Download and start the local agent, then come back to this page.

About the agent and download
  1. Start MyDevTools Agent. It uses the DNS resolver already configured on this computer.
  2. Copy the pairing code from the agent window.
  3. Paste the code below. If the browser asks for local-network access, allow it for this connection.

The browser sends the name and the record type only to the agent on 127.0.0.1. The agent asks this computer's DNS resolver. The query does not go to a MyDevTools server and does not use a public DNS-over-HTTPS service. This browser remembers the selected record type. It does not store the name, the answer, or the pairing code.

Query

A host name, or an IP address when the type is PTR. International names need punycode (xn--). The agent asks this computer's resolver, not a public DoH service.

One record type. PTR reverses an IP address. The search list of this computer still applies.

Answer

Look up a name to see the answer.

DNS Lookup asks the resolver configured on your computer for one name and one record type. The browser does not send the query. The local agent grants dns.lookup separately from http.request and icmp.trace.

Detailed Functionality

Supported types are A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA and PTR. An IP address is accepted only for PTR and is reversed to in-addr.arpa or ip6.arpa on the agent. The answer section is shown as returned, including a CNAME that arrived with the address records. NOERROR with an empty answer is “no records”, and NXDOMAIN means the name is not in DNS. The query uses the operating system resolver, so split DNS and the computer's search list still apply. It is not sent to a MyDevTools server and it is not a public DNS-over-HTTPS lookup. The selected record type stays in this browser. The name and the records do not.

Practical Examples

  • example.com with type A shows the IPv4 addresses from this computer's resolver.
  • example.com with type MX shows mail exchangers and their preference.
  • 1.1.1.1 with type PTR asks for the reverse name.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Start the local agent

Download the agent, start it, and copy the pairing code.

  2. Pair DNS lookup

Paste the code and connect. The page asks for dns.lookup and keeps capabilities this browser already holds.

  3. Look up one name

Enter a host name, choose A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA or PTR, and press Look up. For PTR, enter an IP address.

  4. Read the answer

The table lists name, type, TTL, MX preference and data. Copy the answer as text. Reloading the page clears it.

Tips and Best Practices

  • A lost or refused lookup is an error. An empty NOERROR answer is not a failure.
  • The hosts file is not consulted. Only the DNS resolver answers.
  • At most four lookups run at once. This is not a scan of a network or of a type range.
  • The published Windows download may be older than this page. DNS lookup needs an agent that advertises dns.lookup.
